JOINS SAINT THOMAS HOSPITAL
 
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (Jan. 4, 2010) - Plastic surgeon Robert Garza, M.D. has joined the staff of Saint Thomas Hospital.

"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Garza to Saint Thomas Hospital. He fills a much needed sub-specialty at Saint Thomas. He will be working jointly with other surgeons and oncologists to provide patients both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery options," said Les Donahue, President and CEO, Saint Thomas Hospital.

Plastic surgery encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve functions, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Procedures include: Breast Reconstruction, Breast Reduction, Cleft Lip and Palate Repair, Ear Surgery, Hand Surgery, Scar Revision, Wound Care, and Skin Cancer Treatment.

Since 2008, Dr. Garza has served as a faculty physician at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama prior to moving to Nashville in private practice.

He received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency in plastics and reconstructive surgery at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Garza is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Additionally since 1997, Dr. Garza has completed research and been professionally published in the field of plastic surgery.
